Investigation

Family “Fun”

I packed up the family one bright, summer morning to leave Fayetteville, North Carolina, and head to the lake to get some investigating done. Now, most people might wonder what type of work could possibly get done during a lake day with the family.

Well… let me tell you.

It took a few hours to get there, and since the client asked me to work the case last minute, some things couldn’t be planned ahead of time. The job required a boat, which I had planned to rent upon arrival but low and behold, there was a Trump rally happening that same day. Luckily, the woman renting boats understood that I was there for work, to which she said, “That’s great! One less rally boat to clean; I can’t stand cleaning up after people that have been drinking all day”. This was great news for me, I was a little worried since there were more people coming in by the second. So, I got the wife and kids (and ALL of their supplies), and more importantly, everything I needed to catch my suspect.

At first, I was weary of how many people were out on the lake; having to weave between drunks on their boats was not how I expected this day to go. On the drive up I planned on casually cruising around the lake, taking a few pictures here and there of the “family” while actually capturing my suspect I had zoomed in on between my wife’s head and a fish she was holding or something of the sort. The Trump rally squashed those plans.

Although unexpected, the rally turned out to be a blessing in disguise. This lake is mostly used by locals only so I was nervous a rental boat would stick out like a sore thumb. Fortunately, there were so many different boats on the water, rentals and privately owned, we blended in seamlessly. I puttered around the water for a bit trying to seek out some good vantage points for surveillance and let the wife and kids jump in for a quick swim. Having the family at work can be great in certain situations; it makes us look typical and nonthreatening. The wife and I can even look around easily and pretend to gossip and people watch when really talking about the best way to catch things on camera. Can you imagine how creepy it would look if I was alone just staring people down and mumbling to myself?

The small inlet where the family was swimming was just far enough away from the suspect to seem coincidental but close enough that I could see their comings and goings. As they headed towards their own boat, I had everyone climb back up on our rental and we “joined” the rally. I took it slow, letting some others pass us on the couple mile route but not slow enough to stand out.

Just as I was feeling tense that my strategy might not pan out… guess who comes floating by? I had a hunch that the suspect and their party crew would be joining in on the Pro-Trump festivities, but I couldn't be sure until I found them among the crowd. The target was only a few yards away; the perfect distance to get a long cut of footage. I was just thinking that the timing couldn’t be more perfect, until right in the middle of the crystal clear camera view, I catch the suspect showing PDA with just the wrong person.

Case closed.

Busted...Several Times

A lot of people who call me just have a strong gut feelings that something isn’t right, some people have small hints, and others, they have hard evidence.  When this Client called me right before going out to the field, they tell me they know for a fact their wife is cheating.  I ask the obvious question, “how do you know?”  The Client then sends me a picture of his wife kissing someone else in a barracks parking lot on Fort Bragg/Fort Liberty, North Carolina.

I continue to gather information for the case before he’s got to leave his phone behind and I start the case.  Client tells me he’s in the military and his wife is as well.  Client is TDY (Temporary Duty Station) for about two months.  His wife is here at Fort Bragg/Fort Liberty.  I collect the information and start the investigation.

The first few days of the investigation produced nothing of importance, but that didn’t last long.  I start to catch the Suspect with another male constantly.  Walking around the parking lot, going to stores and restaurants together in the Fayetteville area.  This male and my Suspect were constantly seen together, so much so, my Suspect even goes up to his barracks room with him.  During one of these encounters where my Suspect walked up to this male’s barracks room, the blinds were left open and I was able to see everything… I mean, everything.  For 45 minutes, I observed them conducting.. cardio activities.

Other nights, these two are seen drinking together in the Fort Bragg/Fort Liberty parking lots and in other barracks rooms.  A night in particular, I saw my Suspect drinking at a restaurant in Fayetteville with the male and then returning to the barracks parking lot to continue drinking and hang on each other.  The Suspect is seen getting into her car and driving.  Luckily, some other Soldiers in uniform saw this as well and were able to stop her.

During one of the last nights I watched my Suspect, she was caught in a barracks room with several other males coming out, her being the only female.  I ended surveillance after this encounter.

The Client goes on to report these findings to the proper channels in the Military, but the results were not what any of us suspected.  First off, the Suspect’s chain of command disregarded all the findings, even after it was discovered that she was pregnant by the main male suspect.  Second, my Client got in trouble for reporting all of this.  Third, I had to report the suspect to CID for further issues that were caused.

What a case this one was.  It was a wild ride, filled with surprises, frustration, and a few ‘Hmm’ moments.

Five Signs of Infidelity

What is there to look out for if you suspect that your spouse may be cheating? There are no hard and fast rules, but there are signs that something is amiss, signs that say it may be time to take a closer look into what your spouse is up to. If you find yourself wondering, is my spouse cheating? Keep an eye out for these five signs. While they don’t mean your spouse is definitely cheating, and this list is not exhaustive, these are indications that something is wrong.

A Sudden Lifestyle Change

Is your spouse starting to work out more, eat differently, and change the way they dress? This on its own may just be a sign that they are wanting to take better care of themselves. However, if this is paired with other signs, it is definitely time to be concerned.

Phone Protective

Privacy should certainly be respected, but if your spouse is suddenly twitchy if you hand them their phone, or you notice they have added a passcode where there didn’t use to be one, this is a sign that they have something they are trying to hide from you.

Hard to Reach

If your spouse is suddenly difficult to get ahold of on more than one occasion, and excuses range from the believable to the extreme, this is a major sign that something is going on behind your back.

They Accuse You of Cheating

A guilty conscience makes everyone else look suspicious. If your spouse is cheating, they may ease their conscience by accusing you of lying and cheating on them.

They’re Working More

If your spouse’s work schedule has changed, they’re working longer hours or traveling for work more, they may be lying about being at work.

Don’t end up left out in the dark. Trust your spouse, unless they are giving you a reason not to. Trust your instincts, because often, they are correct. If you start to feel as if there is something off with your spouse and notice they are exhibiting these signs, it is time to dig deeper to protect yourself.

At Desk

A typical day

I have talked with a lot of different types of Private Investigators, each have their own way of making a work schedule.  We’ve all heard the saying, what works for some, doesn’t work for all.  I have found I don’t have a normal schedule.  I can’t work from 9-5 every day, I can’t take every night off, and I can’t have every weekend off.  So, what does a typical day look like?  I’m here to tell you…

I am used to waking up early before the sun's even up.  I start off every morning with 2-3 cups of coffee.  During my morning coffees, I go through emails I may have.  “I need your assistance…”, “Would you like to buy our domain?”, “We need you to process serve person X”, and my all-time favorite “For only $500 a month, you can have a 1-800 number…”.  After my coffee and emails, I’m up and ready to go.  Cameras are charged, reports are up to date, and I have reviewed what I have coming up and what is needed to close a case out.

Finally, I’m out the door, in the creep-mobile, and the podcasts are rolling.  Each day depends on the type of cases I have, custody, alimony, workers comp, etc. These cases, their details, they determine my days.  I’ll sit and do surveillance for several hours, take my notes, catch what I can, then go to fill the creep-mobile back up with gas, grab an energy drink, and get back on the road.

On to my second case of the day… I set up surveillance for several more hours, take my notes, catch what I can, and move out.  While I am in between cases, I am contacting Clients to update them on their case and returning calls/texts to potential Clients.

Once I return to the office, no matter the time, I am sending out Agreements, returning more messages, collecting my notes, and updating reports for the cases I just worked.
